We Make London At The Thames Festival 2011

Forming part of The Craft Trail

We Make London was launched in June 2008. After eight successful fairs We Make is pleased to announce its ninth event, a interactive area as part of the Thames Festival

This will take place on 10^th and 11^th September 2011 12pm – 10pm both days

Location:

The area we have been allocated is space outside of Southwark Crown Court , by the Thames and HMS Belfast (short walk from London Bridge Station)

The Date:

The Thames Festival takes place on the 10^th and 11^th September 2011 from 12pm – 10pm each day

The Thames Festival:

The Mayor’s Thames Festival is London’s largest outdoor arts festival - a spectacular event, free to all, which brings together Londoners of all ages and from all communities to celebrate their city and the River Thames.

The festival commissions new work, and transforms outdoor spaces on and around the River Thames with a mixture of music, dancing, street arts, river races, carnival, pyrotechnics, art installations, massed choirs, food and feasting. The finale is a magical illuminated Night Carnival that winds along the south and north banks of the Thames, followed by a fireworks display fired from the centre of the river itself.

Highly valued by the Mayor of London, London boroughs and the Arts Council, the Thames Festival is one of the capital’s most-loved events, giving Londoners a fabulous free weekend of arts, spectacle and entertainment, and generating a feel-good factor that is second to none.

The festival takes place every September on the River Thames, the riverside walkways, roads, bridges, docks and public open spaces from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge and beyond. It is delivered by the Thames Festival Trust, a not-for-profit charitable trust with an independent board of trustees.

I have been lucky enough to get a small space at this years Thames Festival with we make london. I am really looking forward to meeting lots of new people and being part of what looks like a brilliant event. The Craft Trail will be on the Thames right by HMS Belfast and near to The Tower Of London. Take a look at the we make london blog for details and if you are able to come along on Saturday 10th September 12 noon until 10pm that will be just great.

If you happen to be near Salts Mill in Saltaire on the same day then be sure to visit the Maker's Fair at Victoria Hall. Loads of great makers will be exhibiting their products.

I received this gorgeous mug by Summersville this week.

It was a gift from Lisa stubbs over at LilSonnySky. How did you know that I am a big fan of Summersville prints?!! Lisa is the best present buyer I have met. She has a real knack of knowing exactly what you would like. Her attention to detail is definitely reflected in her adorable illustrations. I have her 'zip a dee doo daa' print on the bedroom landing. It is one of the first things I see at the beginning of each day and at the end when putting the kids to bed. Perfect location!

I am going to make sure that I manage to see Lisa's Kes illustrations at the West Yorkshire Print Workshop.' Kes ' was one of the 'o' level English books studied in the early 80's ( showing my age! ) and one of my Dad's favourite plays. It brings back so many funny memories of school and home. I think that she has captured Kes and the Yorkshire landscape perfectly. The exhibition ' flat cap and whippet' runs from 24th July to 27th august.

I have always had an obvious and large collection of cushions in my home. I grow so attached to each one and do feel sad when it is time to say goodbye. It would usually be because they had too much felt tip, Ribena or red wine on them and despite being gorgeous they would just have to go. Maybe I am so attached to each cushion because I have lovingly made it or because it reminds me of the wonderful holiday when I bought it.

Log cabin patchwork is an ancient technique but by combining these new and modern prints gives it a contemporary look.

Log cabin patchwork was traditionally not quilted as it was made with the small sections of old clothing which were usually too thick to be quilted. So glad I don't have to stick to those rules! I love quilting patchwork pieces. It instantly changes something quite flat into a luxurious piece of its own.

I love this combination of prints and colour. Which one is my favourite? .......... the last one I made is always my favourite!!!

I believe that spending time with family should be ' simple, uncomplicated and not contrived '. While browsing through my blog list today I came across a post by Cassandra Ellis who enlightened me about the brilliant and beautiful magazine Kinfolk. It is full of wonderful images and photography of small gatherings. The artists behind Kinfolk also believe that simple entertaining is more enjoyable.

This Brooklyn garden party looks very inviting and relaxing. Totally inspired!

Meet Portscatho...

The inspiration for the * new * bag design ' Portscatho' came when looking through last years holiday photos. We are Cornwall lovers and have visited more times than we have had hot dinners. The journey down completely wedged into the car with camping gear in every possible space, picnic hampers and longboards is so uncomfortable and so long but so worth it. Being fans of the waves on the west coast it was a bit bold of us to dare over to the east coast. What a pleasant surprise. Portscatho turned out to be a hidden secret that we were so glad to find.

The coves, coastal paths and quaint cottages with their exotic cornish plants made this a perfect holiday destination.

Even when the weather is bad this coastline is stunning.

The carefully placed embroidery represent the gentle coastline and soft headland.

DRIES VAN NOTEN

The summer holidays are looming. Only 3 more days to go. Yikes! That means the next few weeks will fly past and before we know it we will be running around getting school uniforms ready for the first week in September. I need to knuckle down and make as much stock as I can before Francis and Cecilia take over the next few weeks of my life.

I have been thinking about Autumn today and spent a coffee break looking for inspiration. These are my favourite finds.

A passion for plants

It started with a window box planted with herbs on a small window sill in a tiny flat in West London. I have spent more time than I wish to remember digging, fertilising, planting and most of my wages on the gardens of our 3 previous houses.

Gardening in the Pennines has been hit and miss. I tried to continue my love for gravel gardens and mediterranean, architectural and succulent type plants in my tiny new garden at the foot of Saddleworth Moor. No chance! My heart has been broken too many times. They hate it here. I have come to terms with it now and with the help of Dove Cottage Nursery in Halifax my borders are coming along nicely.

I love walking out my front door past this border mixed with tall, short, spiky, soft herbaceous plants. The sound of miscanthus gently swaying in the breeze is wonderful.

I wish I had more room for more verbascum. The verbena will be at its best to replace it when it fades though.

This yellow achillea really lifts this corner. It looks fab against the stone wall. Something tall in the corner will finish it off. Maybe another Stipa Gigantea. Can't have enough of those! It looks a bit thin at the moment but next year it should be more mature with bigger plants spilling over and softening the edges.

We were lucky to find this old bench at the at the dump recently. A bit wobbly and dirty at first but a lick of some left over Pigeon by Farrow and Ball has made it rather smart don't you think?

.............. the Liberty book of Home Sewing is a definite on my christmas wish list. It will be out in the bookshops sometime in the Autumn. I will just have to drool over these images that I can find until it has been published.

I love the photography and styling. I love that dress. I love all that raspberry red.

An inspiring weekend

I spent the weekend at Wiveton Hall on the north Norfolk coast. It was a gorgeous place and I think that you will agree. Interesting coastline and beautiful countryside, tasty tapas, seals at Blakeney Point and an abundance of craft and antique shops............. just my cup of tea!

I forgot to take my camera to snap some pictures at Blakeney point but the golden sand, clear waters and swimming seals were spectacular.

The Hope Bag

It took us a while to find this beautiful part of Derbyshire where I now love to walk, cycle or just sit and admire the landscape. The Hope Valley in the High Peak District is really magnificent all year round. I love walking over to Strines Moor during the Autumn months surrounded by an amazing palette of colours across the landscape.

We spent a day in the Hope Valley during half term. It wasn't one of the lovely sunny days but that didn't stop us swimming in the Lido in Hathersage, walking and enjoying the view while having a barbeque.

What a view!

The patchwork effect on the hills and the steep woodland make this landscape a constant inspiration to me. We love to spot the strange and wonderful wildlife that live here but we haven't got a clue what most of them are called! I must look out for some Ladybird nature books.

Holmfirth Art Market

After a few days of walks, outdoor swimming, picnics and barbeques I am back to sewing and creating. I will be exhibiting at this art market on Sunday 12th June so feeling a little under pressure. I am working on a few new styles and designs for this event.

Holmfirth Art Market is a brilliant place to see lots and lots of really talented makers. It is definitely one not to miss.

I am looking forward to exhibiting at one of my favourite places in West Yorkshire. Saltaire is a world heritage site and is home to the David Hockney Gallery in Salts Mill. Lots of makers will be selling their lovely things in Victoria Hall on Victoria Road over the bank holiday weekend along with lots of other activities in local venues. for a list of events check the Saltaire Arts Trail website

The Newlyn purse is one of my best selling designs. I named my small coin purse after our largest fishing port on the south coast of Cornwall. We have spent many summer holidays here, Christmas, New Year and my Hen weekend!

Watching the fishing boats bobbing up and down on the horizon with their bright lights shining across the sea in the middle of the night is a spectacular scene.

There is something special about visiting one of the fish shops at the harbour to buy some sardines, mackerel or sea bass to put on the barbeque knowing that it has been caught that morning.

We are returning to Newlyn this summer. Home-made clotted cream ice-cream, Newlyn Art Gallery, fish and chips, perfect pasties, visually inspiring................ can't wait!

Patchwork style cushion workshop

I spent a lovely day with Sian and Yvonne passing on my sewing skills and knowledge. It was so delightful to work with such enthusiastic people. They had both completed a previous course with 'make at green view ' and were ready to take on a more challenging course.

As you can see from the pictures of the completed cushions they did an amazing job for their first attempt at patchwork and quilting.

Absolutely gorgeous!

A literary tea experience

The Spring break isn't over yet but I have managed to sneak away from the madness that is going on around me to get a few minutes to mention the best of it so far.

After punting along the river Cam and learning about the history of the many university colleges we decided to enjoy tea and cake in Grantchester, Cambridge. We sat in deckchairs in the orchard where more famous poets and writers have sipped tea than anywhere else in the world including Virginia Wolfe, E M Forster, Sylvia plath and John Betjeman. Bliss!

Despite the cold wind here yesterday we packed a picnic and spent a great day exploring the North Yorkshire Moors. I had heard about the waterfalls but had no idea how breathtaking the landscape would be. Climbing rocks always goes down well with my children.

We looked for fairies at Jane's foss which is home to many and even has a tree stump full of coins for the tooth fairies!

And to finish the day.....

.......we had tea in the best pub. The Craven Arms is hidden away in a small place called Appletreewick. Great food and really friendly landlord. I was so happy with my guiness and fish stew that I have decided to call my new purse Appletreewick.

Off to chester tomorrow to visit family. Planning an adventure for the weekend. I need to discover a new place to name my new wristlet purse.

Longshaw Estate was stumbled upon one summers day when the nights were long and we had all the time in the world to discover the wonders of the Derbyshire Peak District. It is definitely special. After studying the panoramic views there is a beautiful walk along a gorge with large stepping stones to cross the streams.

An accent of yellow........

This week has brought great weather for the Spring garden. The daffodils are in full bloom and the tulips are ready to burst. Spring comes much later here in the Pennines than in the warmer parts of the country.

After a few days of rain the yellowness of Spring took me by surprise when the sun shone brightly through the windows today. Its cheerfulness made me look around my house and observe how an accent of yellow can make all the difference.

This is my favourite Angie Lewin print and I am so glad I purchased it in this lovely shade of yellow. It looks perfect on our Robin Day sofa.

Euphorbia has got to be my most favourite Spring plant for the garden.

This vase is nearly as old as me. It was an impulsive purchase that I couldn't really afford from Designers Guild but I just had to have it. That was life BC ( before children!)

Susie cooked this dish for me. Rack of lamb marinated in mint, honey and chilli. The best meal I have had this year. Full of flavour and perfectly cooked.

It's all about the name....

Each style of purse or bag or apron in the 'made at green view' range has been named after the places that I love to spend my weekends or holidays. I have had an idea about sharing these special places with you over the next few weeks.

The Hathersage purse is one of the first clasp frame clutches that I made and as a trip to Hathersage never fails to brighten up the day, it only felt right to name it after the the place where you can find the best architect designed cafe. ( It's not official, just my opinion! )

Hathersage is a small, picturesque village located above the Derwent Valley in the Peak District. My perfect way to pass a sunny afternoon is to visit the David Mellor Design Museum for tea, cake and to purchase a new wooden spoon from the cook shop. I know that I don't need to tell you that David Mellor is one of the best known 20th century British designers but there may be some things he designed that may surprise you. This design museum is definitely worth a trip not just for the lovely food, setting and shop but to understand a little more about this great designer.

Time for Colour

Moving into a house that has been completely renovated does has some advantages.We have been able to enjoy, discover and play in the Pennines for the last 3 years without needing to instore a new kitchen or bathroom, knock down walls or redecorate. However I am really tired of my beige house now and I think that it is time to get the paint charts out and add some life and personality to our home.

I do love a dirty blue or green but have struggled to find some new colours that haven't been used in our previous homes. I need not struggle anymore as Farrow and Ball have introduced 9 new colours to their collection. to relieve me from the agony of combining colour combinations they have done it perfectly. Brilliant marketing.

The last six months have been so busy keeping up with making my bags and purses to sell at fairs and supply stockists that I just had to be strong and wean myself off my blogging addiction to stay on track. You know what it is like, a quick look at a few blogs is an impossible task. Before you know it days have gone by and your making is behind schedule again!

As well as creating and making products for 'made at greenview' I have been developing sewing workshops around and about which I have
enjoyed immensely so 'make at greenview' has been created offering a range of courses to suit all. A new blog dedicated to course information, dates and photos is available for you to view.

I have a new date for my purse making workshop on Saturday 26th February 2010 at Ministry of Craft. Sam runs a great range of courses in central Manchester from cup cake decorating to lampshade making.

Creative Space

It has been a couple of weeks since I showed you what I have been up to in my dining room. That has mainly been due to having so many visitors over the Easter holiday and being creative in the kitchen rather than with a needle and thread. I have however been keeping up with being crafty and set myself a small, portable project that I could do while being the hostess with mostess . I know it is not the season but I really want a pair of wrist warmers so when I found this great pattern and this most amazing yarn in this fantastic shop I was more than pleased.

It knits a fair isle type of pattern itself. How clever is that?! It was really hard to choose from the range of colours available but I am best pleased with this ochre and mouse colour combo.

I am going to knit those socks next. They will be perfect and keep me warm while camping on a cornish cliff top in the summer!

I haven't added any new comments to my blog recently. Things have been quite frantic in my studio ( dining room! ). I have exhibited at a couple of spring fairs which went very well and I now have another stockist of my purses and bags at artparade gallery in Saltaire, Bradford. My stock is VERY low which is a good sign but I need to put a whole new range together for my next Artsmix fair on Sunday 25th April at Castle Howard in North Yorkshire. Only 10 days to go so I will definitely be burning the candle at both ends as soon as my 2 are back at school.

I was very lucky to find this Grayson Perry fabric in a wonderful pink and orange colourway. I love his wit and playful ideas which is something I try to put into my work when I choose colour and print combinations. This style is available in artparade and I will be selling more at Castle howard on the 25th April.

The Easter holidays have been '"the most best of all" says cecilia age 7. We have visited LOTS of family and LOTS of family have visited us. We have managed to go to our favourite spot for walks, picnics and bike rides. Sometimes I find it hard to believe that we live so close to the most idyllic countryside.

We are so excited to have found a lido set in the most stunning landscape. I can't wait for the summer months to arrive and splash about with that amazing scenery to look at.

And of course a cream tea at the David Mellor museum and a new wooden spoon from the cook shop to finish off!!!!!

Lovely handles

I have been searching the world for some leather and wooden handles. It has been a hard task as there is so much choice available. I have decided to add a leather handle to my tote style bags and look at these gorgeous handmade wooden handles. They are perfect for adding a quality finish and they sit so well with the my combination of print and pattern.

I will be adding these new styles 'Penlee' and ' Blakeney' to my etsy shop soon.

Marvelous Ministry of Craft

Really excited to be running a workshop at the Ministry of Craft in Manchester on the 29th May. It is a fantastic organisation that has been set up by Sam Sterken and she has a huge range of courses on offer throughout the year. It is brilliantly located in the Fred Aldous building between Piccadily and Victoria train station. Sam has kindly arranged for me to teach a group how to make their own snap frame purse. It is sure to be a fun and rewarding day.

A lot of people ask me if I make bags with wipeable linings and I always have to reply

" sorry, no I don't ".

Well, now I can say

" yes I do "

because I bought some wipe clean fusible plastic from U Handbag and I have spent my morning making my linings wipeable. It really is quite easy too.

After cutting and interlining your pieces it is time to add a bit of heat......

It sews brilliantly well too.....

and as if by magic......... a new pouch for my lippie!

Creative Space

Well, I didn't spend much time in my creative space last week as the children had a week off school and we had sisters and cousins visiting so I have been determined to get back into the swing of things and contribute to Kirsty's great idea at Kootoyoo.

I have decided that I have not been following my philosophy of combining prints and patterns in a playful way. Lately I have been producing products that have been , quite frankly , a little less fun so I have spent time this week going back to my roots as you can see.....

Time for coffee and some energy booster!!

As I am the most easily distracted person on this planet I have been adopting strategies to keep me in my creative space. I do have a tendency to sneak back on the computer and start reading all your blogs and the next thing 2 hours have whizzed by and I have made nothing.

Music is wonderful to help the creative mind. I have been listening to the cinematique orchestra today and I must thank them for keeping me focused and on task !

I do love a new, crisp tea towel!! I got this lovely one as a birthday present from my big sis. It is hand printed by Thornback and Peel. I love the detail of each print on the bright white. They are all gorgeous.

We decided to celebrate pancake day by going all american and making those breakfast ones that are thick but really light and spongy... well mine were but not sure if they are supposed to be!! If you pour loads of maple syrup all over them they aren't fattening at all!!! Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous!

Creative Space

I have been finishing a couple of coordinated ranges in my creative space this week but today
my creative space was not at my usual worktable for most of the day. Manchester was my creative space. I made a visit to Abakhan Fabrics on Oldham Street and found a great long awaited spotty, cotton fabric perfect for lining my fabric purses.

I had a good look around MAGMA (without children...bliss! ) the best design bookshop I know. I saw some great crafting at Manchester Craft and Design centre.

I have been playing my new cd Fleet Foxes ( this track is my fave ) in my creative space today. Lucky the neighbours were out as it was rather loud!!!

I saw these beautifully printed bags by Tobias and the Angel in an old copy of Selvedge and whenever I flick through for inspiration they jump out at me every time. The detailed pattern, colour and simple shape bag is perfect for me. Gorgeous!

I love combining textured and printed fabric in a playful way. I adore how Ellie Evans has done so to create this lovely pin cushion. Nice pins!!

I have always wanted to own a Margo Selby scarf or bag. Her clever colour combinations work really well especially with the lovely tones in this cushion.

A passion for print

I need some fresh and new fabrics for a Spring collection. I think I need a trip to Soho to get lost in rolls of gorgeous fabrics.

There isn't a better feeling for me than the nervous excitement I get having stumbled upon a shop selling fabric. I used to buy my fabric from the markets in Liverpool while still at school but I later discovered the fabric shops in London. I would spend many hours studying and wanting the amazing fabrics in Liberty and come away with enough to make a mini skirt or a very short top because a student grant wouldn't stretch any further . What a selection they used to have. Portobello was another favourite market to pick up something unique.

Liberty is still in my top 5 for exquisite prints. The detail and colour combinations always makes me melt. I have picked out some of my favourites from the new spring 2010 collection.

And then I found Marimekko. Well what more can I say apart from I love my Marimekko curtains around my house. I never tire of them. I especially love the prints from the 1950's and 1960's.

One of the reasons for starting this blog was to help me develop Greenview further. I have received such lovely feedback from customers and friends and family that I know think it IS worth pursuing. I realised last week that I have been far too dictorial. Who do I think I am telling you what to do with your bag, purse, clutch etc ? I am feeling quite ashamed of myself being a liberal, open minded sort of girl. Do you know what ? You can put whatever you like in your purse, pouch, clutch, case, container!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From now on my purses and bags will no longer be called purses and bags... look at my etsy shop if you dont believe me. I have renamed them and you are allowed to put whatever you like in them!!!!!

Tickets to see my most favourite artists of the moment have arrived. We have been waiting for Gotan Project to play in the uk for ages. If only I could dance like that. They aren't playing for a few weeks so there is time yet! Dead excited. I love live music.

Hello to everyone involved in creative space. I have been working like a trojan this week trying to make my usual clutches, purses and glasses cases for a Valentine Sale in Broadstairs. I am pleased with the dandelion ( Angie Lewin print ) apron. It is definitely the end of the week... look at the mess on my work table!!

I have also been working on a new style bag with an adjustable leather strap. So far so good. It still needs developing but I have got the basic pattern drafted.

Looking forward to getting some great colour combinations done. Brown straps..black straps..or a combination? Need to work that out.

At last I have found the time to open a shop on the Folksy website. I've been putting it off and off thinking I didn't have time and should be sewing and sewing and sewing for my Valentine sale in Broadstairs, Kent... but more on that later!
It actually took the time it takes to boil a pan of water to cook some pasta. And I listed an item to sell in that time too. Every time I manage to work out something technical all on my own, when the children are at school and Joe is at work, I'm so chuffed with myself.

Very pleased with my varying size of purses. I adore the print used for the clutch bag. I can't get enough of it. My snip snip purse is a new size. Bigger than a purse but smaller than a clutch. Handy!

Hi, my name is Geraldine. I love sewing and I love fabrics. When I was young I used to make lots of my own clothes and sometimes clothes for my friends. I studied clothing design/manufacturing and worked in the industry for a few years. Now I have discovered a passion for making bags and purses. My small business 'greenview' has been going for a year now. I started selling on etsy www.etsy.com/shop/ www.madeatgreenview.etsy.com last Autumn and had lots of fun selling my products at markets. This blog is to keep me focused and help me develop my work and make it better. I am so easily distracted that I forget what I should be doing and hopefully the blog will help me remember any great ideas that come to me in the day.

I am going to open a shop on 'folksy'. I need to make a few things first. I have got a selection of gorgeous fabrics ready on my work table. Clutches and purses I think.
